The Value of Project Management

In this tight labour market, many businesses are running lean operations. If your business doesn’t have resources to spare, then it’s critical that you execute projects as efficiently as possible because if you don’t, the project will drag on and drain both financial and human resources from your business.  This is where a project manager can play a key role.

The mission of a project manager is to work with your business to determine the scope and resources available to a project and come up with a project plan to execute the project on-time and on budget.  They will prepare and manage the communication and execution plan and are responsible for putting together lessons learned documentation at the end of the project to determine what improvements could have been made from the beginning to the end of the project.  Having a dedicated resource to manage a project has the added benefit of freeing up you and your staff to focus on executing the project tasks as well as taking care of your day-to-day responsibilities.

If this all sounds good to you, then you should consider some additional benefits:

  • You don’t need to hire a full-time project manager if you only need occasional help with projects.  You can hire a contract project manager as needed to help you.  If you find a good contract project manager, you can always get their help in the future as your business grows.

  • The expense of a project manager can offset the potential cost of a project that does not meet the scope, budget, or timeline you desire.

  • Project implementations are very stressful to a business, and you want to ensure that your staff aren’t overwhelmed between their project responsibilities and their day-to-day jobs.  A project manager can be a useful intermediary to listen to staff and communicate their concerns to you and your management team.
Should you choose to hire a project manager, then you want to ensure that they are a good fit for your company.  A good project manager will work to understand the culture of your business and adapt their working style to fit in well.  If a project manager has worked with large enterprises and can’t adapt to a smaller business environment, then it’s not going to work out well for you or them.  If you feel that your project manager isn’t a good fit, then talk to them about your concerns and if things don’t improve, it’s best to move on and find someone who is a better fit for your company.
